Android 15's ‘Notification Cooldown’ lets you limit distractions

Android 15 has a “Notification Cooldown” feature which forces a smartphone to tame persistent alerts from apps. The feature isn’t easily visible or accessible, but it offers Android smartphone users the much-needed respite from notifications.

Notification Cooldown comes back in Android 15

Any smartphone, be it an iPhone running iOS or Android, has notifications. These remind users about messages and alerts from apps. Needless to say, these devices are a haven for businesses and services looking to contact people. The growing “Notifications” menace can be switched off. However, smartphone users may miss important notifications.

Android 15 includes a “Notification Cooldown” feature. As the name implies, the new feature attempts to tame the apps that pester users with a barrage of notifications. This is yet another feature that seeks to alter app behavior and appearance.

The new, and still experimental feature discovered recently in Android 15 Beta 1.2, has a high probability of landing on all smartphones which get Android 15. This is because Mishaal Rahman over at Android Authority has indicated the Notification Cooldown feature is in the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) edition as well.

How to tame incessant alerts in Android 15?

Android 15 is already on the second Developer Preview version. The Notification Cooldown feature was rather limited in the first one. However, Google has granted some more power to the feature, making it even more capable.

For reasons yet unknown, Google redacted the Notification Cooldown feature in Android 15 Beta 1. However, Rahman discovered it hasn’t been obliterated, and even brought it back to life.

The Notifications Cooldown feature is located inside the Settings > Notification page. Interestingly, Google has added a “Vibrate when unlocked” toggle to the page.

According to the description of the setting, this feature will restrict the Android smartphone from vibrating inside the user’s pocket when they receive several notifications from the same app.

Interestingly, the Vibrate when unlocked feature, is opt-in, unlike the Notification Cooldown feature. Using this new feature, however, is quite straightforward.

Notification Cooldown will essentially limit haptic feedback for apps that send a lot of notifications in a short period. However, users who are worried about missing out on important notifications or alerts can choose to keep “Vibrate when unlocked off“, and only activate “Apply cooldown to all notifications” or “Apply cooldown to conversations”.
