What is the diesel claims checker?

The diesel claims checker is being used to check whether those who have owned diesel cars in the last few years are eligible for financial compensation.

The issue arose when Audi and Volkswagen faced regulatory action over some of their diesel cars in the US in 2015.

Having become known as “Dieselgate” it now includes other vehicle manufacturers too.

The group legal claims allege that the carmakers used illegal “defeat devices” in their diesel vehicles to cheat the tests done by regulators to check their emissions levels, before approving vehicles for sale.

The case is for cars and vans registered between 2009 and 2020.

Is the diesel claims checker legit?

In short, yes, the diesel claims checker is legit.

Following a number of hearings relating to the Mercedes case in 2023 the High Court confirmed a trial date for Mercedes in February 2025 and set a formal cut-off date of 22 February 2024 for new claimants coming forward.

However some individual law firms have set their own deadlines to ensure they can gather the right information to present to the court.

How do I check if I have a claim?

To check if you could be eligible for a claim then you need to head online.

However there is some guidance which you can check to see if you are in for a claim which include:

  • You would have never have bought the vehicle had you known about the alleged emissions flaws.
  • You paid more for the car than you otherwise would have. For example, because you paid a premium for what you thought was a more environmentally friendly car.
  • If the car or van had to be fixed to comply with emissions standards, the fix itself may have led to worse fuel efficiency or worse performance – potentially lowering its value or creating added cost.

There are website online where you can enter your registration plate and check if you are entitled to a claim.

Signing up for the case is free as it is a “no win, no fee” legal claim but if you do join and the claim is successful between a third and a half of the pay out will go to the law firm.

Even if you win, then claims could take up to five years to receive.

It’s important to only sign up if you genuinely think you have a case.

If you’re not sure then it could be an idea to speak to a law firm directly to ask for some advice.
