South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks public input on electric vehicle charging stations – Fox Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) -In a bid to drive the state towards a greener future, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is reaching out to the public for insights on how best to power electric vehicles (EVs).

As part of their initiative, they’re hosting community meetings to gather input from electric car owners and those considering making the switch.

Chloe McGoogin, who, along with her 10-year-old son Moses, recently transitioned to an electric vehicle, bidding farewell to the gas pump. Their Volvo C4 Recharge SUV has offered them not just environmental benefits but also the convenience of avoiding gas stations altogether.

“One of the biggest pros is not having to go to a gas station. It’s something I just don’t like doing. That’s the biggest personal pro,” McGoogin said.

However, the transition hasn’t been without its challenges.

“We need more, our closest fast charger might be about maybe eight miles away. The one we really like to go to is at least a 15 minute drive to get out there,” McGoogin said.

Rob Bedenbauga, an engineer with SCDOT, noted that public feedback has consistently highlighted concerns regarding safety, charging speed, and amenities at charging stations. He acknowledged that EV charging is perceived as a longer process compared to a quick stop at a traditional gas station.

Despite this, McGoogin emphasized the financial benefits, estimating potential savings of around $100 by switching to an electric vehicle.

To further engage with the public, SCDOT is hosting meetings to encourage dialogue and idea-sharing. Tomorrow morning, a session will be held at the CC Woodson Community Center in Spartanburg at 11:30 AM, followed by another on Monday at the Pickens County Library at 5 PM.
