The 2024 New York International Auto Show debuted a cool new Kia compact sedan and two refreshed Hyundais, previewed the future of the Genesis marque and gave us an up-close look at hot new models from Nissan and Porsche. Electric vehicles continue to make big news — and win big awards from the press — while once again, the South Korean marques sort of stole the show.

Cars.com’s Editorial team got a sneak peek of the 2024 edition of the show before it opens to the public March 29. Here’s the highlight reel of the big stories and reveals we published from the show.

The Future of Genesis Is Luxurious and Fast

Genesis unveiled several concepts at the New York show that offer a preview of the brand’s direction. First off, there’s the Neolun, an elegantly proportioned electric SUV full of luxe materials and features, including a step to help you get in, a dash-mounted crystal sphere that rotates as the sound system is on and front seats that swivel to face rear passengers. Closer to production, however, is the GV60 Magma Concept that previews Genesis’ new Magma high-performance line; think BMW M but with more letters — and South Korean. With bright orange paint, body-colored accents inside and out, and a big wing on the back, it certainly got our attention.

The Forte’s Funky Replacement

Kia’s bringing its next small sedan more in line with the automaker’s current naming conventions and styling language, and it looks pretty cool. The K4 keeps the Forte’s 147-horsepower four-cylinder as its base engine and offers a 195-hp, turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder on higher trims. Sadly, it loses the dual-clutch automatic and manual transmission options that made the Forte GT a bit more fun, but it does double down on safety and convenience tech. According to Kia, this wider, longer Forte replacement offers the best rear legroom in its class, too.

Nissan Kicks Gets Rugged New Looks, AWD

The New York show also provided us with a look at the new Nissan Kicks, which got a slick modern redesign for 2025 and, for the first time ever, all-wheel drive as an option. We were impressed with the updates Nissan made to keep its popular small SUV competitive with the likes of hot new SUVs in its class including the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista. The new Kicks boasts its best interior yet by a long shot, too.

Porsche’s New EVs Are Familiar but Modern

Making their North American auto show debuts were Porsche’s new 2024 Macan EV and 2025 Taycan Turbo S. The Taycan Turbo S refresh is mostly beneath the sheet metal, so what we saw largely proved Porsche took a “don’t fix what works” approach to its latest version. Our closer look at the new Macan EV shows Porsche carried over a lot of familiar touches from across its line there, as well, but we found it to be rather uncomfortable for taller passengers, particularly in the rear seats. Only time will tell if the Porsche faithful will find its hot dual-motor EV setup worth the bump in price.

Sharp New Refreshes of Hyundai’s Tucson and Santa Cruz

Hyundai debuted a couple of refreshes that we’re excited about to two of its models: the Tucson SUV and Santa Cruz pickup truck. For the 2025 Tucson, Hyundai finally fixed one of our biggest complaints by bringing physical controls back for key stereo and climate controls across every trim. While some of the frustrating touch-sensitive controls remain, the most used functions are at least covered by regular knobs and buttons, so that’s a start. Its cute-ute cousin, the 2025 Santa Cruz, also got the same readdition of select physical controls, as well as a more imposing front-end redesign and new off-road-oriented XRT trim.
