These pay numbers were revealed in a recent company filing ahead of Meta’s annual shareholder meeting next month. The tech giant employs around 67,000 people globally. The median figure means half of Meta’s made more than $379,000 last year, while the other half made less.

Out of Zuckerberg’s $24.4 million payout, his official salary remained $1, a symbolic amount he has received for over a decade as his wealth has ballooned to $176 billion based on his Meta stock holdings.
But that $24.4 million covered some pretty cushy perks, and is categorised as “other compensation” in Meta’s filing. Around $9.4 million went towards personal security costs to protect Zuckerberg at his mansions and when he’s gallivanting on private jets or yachts (the filing says $1 million covered his private air travel in 2023).
Meta claims its CEO receives so much security because he’s the human embodiment of the company at this point. “Negative sentiment towards our company is directly associated with Mr. Zuckerberg,” the filing stated. So, his protection ain’t cheap!
“We believe that Mr. Zuckerberg’s role puts him in a unique position: he is synonymous with Meta and, as a result, negative sentiment regarding our company is directly associated with, and often transferred to, Mr. Zuckerberg,” the company wrote in the filing. “Mr. Zuckerberg is one of the most-recognized executives in the world, in large part as a result of the size of our user base and our continued exposure to global media, legislative, and regulatory attention.”
While Zuckerberg’s nominal $1 salary looks laughable next to the tens of millions in security and travel the company covers, his pay is just part of the picture. His net worth is an estimated $176 billion, almost from his sweeping ownership of Meta stock.
