SUATS modify transportation project deadlines with Transportation Improvement Program – WIS News 10

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – Getting around Sumter County is set to change after officials discussed changes to construction projects expected to be completed in the next few years.

“About $275 million worth of transportation improvements that range from corridor improvements to intersection updates, to bridge replacements, to sidewalk installation,” said Kyle Kelly, the Senior Planner for Sumter County.

The Sumter Area Transportation Study, also known as “SUATS,” is an organization that aims to improve roadways, sidewalks, bridges, and railways in the city and county of Sumter.

“The things that we are trying to look at is identifying problem points,” Kelly said, “Places that are unsafe; where we see a history of safety challenges, where there have been fatalities happening at a rate where there may be an engineering solution.”

Their newly proposed Transportation Improvement Program now has some projects’ completion dates getting pushed into the 2026 fiscal year.

“Because of various complications in the permitting process, now that means some of them were let to be this fall,” Kelly said, “They might be let a few months later, and that’s technically the next fiscal year. So, we have to adjust to the new year.”

He also explained how projects like the revitalization happening on Manning Ave are expected to be completed sooner, while others will be done later.

“The things that we are trying to look at is identifying problem points; places that are unsafe,” Kelly said, “There we see a history of safety challenges where there have been fatalities happening at a rate where there may be an engineering solution.”
