Sega announces Sonic Rumble battle royale game for Android, iOS

Sega has announced Sonic Rumble, a platformer “battle royale” game for Android and iOS devices. The new mobile game brings Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the insanely popular series to iPhones and Android smartphones.

Sonic Rumble is a 32-player mobile game similar to Fall Guys

Sonic the Hedgehog, and the myriad characters from Sega’s timeless series, are coming to the Google Play Store and Apple’s iOS App Store. Sega has confirmed it is readying Sonic Rumble, a game that resembles Fall Guys, a platformer battle royale game by Mediatonic.

Just like Fall Guys, Sonic Rumble has 32 players who compete against each other. The game will allow players to control toy figures of characters based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sega indicated,

“In Sonic Rumble, players will take control of toy figures to compete in thrilling 32-player battle royale challenges, racing against each other to collect the most rings and prove themselves to be the fastest in the toybox. With iconic characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe available for customization, players can create their unique avatars and dive into the action-packed gameplay.”

Sonic Rumble will crown the “fastest toy of all” to the character who successfully faces multiple challenges and clears hurdles. Sega has released a brief trailer. It shows the characters racing to the finish line with changing landscapes and multiple obstacles along the way.

When and how to play Sonic Rumble on iOS and Android devices?

According to 9to5Google, Sonic Rumble takes place in a “cheery toy world” created by Sonic’s usual villain, Dr. Eggman. Rovio, the studio that gave the world the wildly popular Angry Birds, is developing Sonic Rumble. Incidentally, Sega acquired Rovio last year for a surprisingly low price of $775 million.

Sega hasn’t indicated any firm release date for the final and stable version of Sonic Rumble. Moreover, it is not clear if Sonic Rumble will be free-to-play with ads and in-game purchases or if Sega will ask players to buy the game.

Sega has merely stated the game will arrive this winter. This suggests Sonic Rumble may be released during the holiday season. Incidentally, the third animated feature film in the Sonic the Hedgehog series is slated to release on December 24.

Sega has, however, offered the game for beta testing. The company is giving a mere two-day window to test the game. The window for beta testing Sonic Rumble opens on May 24 at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET and closes on May 26 at 8 pm PT / 11 pm ET. Registrations are open till May 19, 2024.
