Pune: Two held for robbing smartphone, cash from cab driver

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad police on Monday evening arrested two men on the charge of assaulting and robbing a cab driver of his cellphone and cash collectively worth Rs 16,000 at Shivaji chowk in Hinjewadi.
The arrested suspects were identified as Mayur Rajendra Nanaware (22) of Maan near Hinjewadi and his friend Pradeep Rajendra Sawant (24) of Kharadi.
The cab driver, Chandrashekhar Vitthal Hanwate (42) of Pimpri, lodged a complaint in this connection with the Hinjewadi police later the same morning.
Sub inspector Tukaram Khadake of Hinjewadi police said, “Nanaware is a petrol pump attendant while Sawant is a casual worker. Nanaware had gone to Sawant’s place and had booked a cab at Kharadi to reach Maan. Hanwate picked them up at Kharadi and started driving towards Maan. After reaching the Shivaji chowk area in Hinjewadi they asked the cab driver to halt the vehicle.”
“The duo then slapped Hanwate and robbed his cell phone and cash, totally worth Rs 16,000. And then they ran away from the spot. However, we tracked them using the details of their cell phone which they used to book the cab,” Khadke said.
Khadake said, “The two had fancy for good phones and spotted that the cab driver was using a good smartphone. They failed to resist the urge to have such a phone and decided to rob it.”
