CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Transportation experts in Charleston are looking at possible ways to reconfigure Meeting Street Road this summer.
The City of Charleston Planning and Traffic and Transportation Departments are working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation to possibly implement a new configuration of the roadway after it gets resurfaced this summer.
The SCDOT’s plans to resurface Meeting Street Road between Spruill Avenue to Mount Pleasant Street means officials can restripe the road’s layout to promote safety and accessibility.
The agencies are working to get public feedback on a proposal that would change a portion of Meeting Street Road from Spruill Avenue to Mount Pleasant Street.
If implemented, the proposed change would turn the four-lane road into a two-lane road with a center turn lane. It would also add bike lanes that would be protected by on-street parking spaces.
Business owner Michael Presnell says the change would make leaving his driveway difficult.
“The parking, they want to do up two lanes to put on street parking. I have a business down here and my driveway when I come out of it, I cannot see to pull out in traffic until I have 5-foot of my vehicle in the oncoming lane,” Presnell says.
The City of Charleston says that it will use feedback from tonight’s meeting to form its plans for Meeting Street Road.
That will then be pitched to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, which will decide whether to move forward with the project.
