OpenAI could announce a search engine on Monday

We’ve been following news that OpenAI is planning on eventually launching a search engine. Well, now is quite a time to do so, as we are only days away from Google I/O. After rumors that the company was going to announce it on May 9th, we now have word that OpenAI could announce its search engine on Monday; just one day before Google’s event!

In case you don’t know, Google AI is set to go down on Tuesday, May 14th. During the event, we expect Google to announce new additions and developments for its products such as Android, Chrome, Search, Wear OS, Etc. While Google will cover a range of topics, we know that the company is going to primarily focus on AI.

OpenAI could announce a search engine on Monday

The timing of this couldn’t be more poetic, as it could be just one day before Google I/O. When it comes to information about the search engine, details are pretty scarce. What we know is that it’s going to heavily leverage OpenAI’s artificial intelligence, and we’re pretty sure that it’s going to give generative search results. So, unlike a traditional search engine that will only show you links to different sites, the search engine could pull information from different sites, and give you AI-generated results.

We know that OpenAI is working long and hard on this search engine, but we’re also certain that it’s getting a lot of help from its biggest contributor Microsoft. Microsoft owns Bing, which is the second-largest search engine in the world. It’s been in a long battle against Google, so anything to take some of the wind out of Google’s sails is probably welcome to Microsoft. We’re pretty certain that some of the technology powering Bing could also go to power OpenAI’s search engine.

However, Microsoft shouldn’t take all of the credit; we have to give some credit to Google. According to sources, OpenAI has been tapping Google employees to help build up its search engine team.

Hopefully, this does not start a domino effect

We can’t deny that some of Google’s AI products have been rushed. The company has to stay ahead of the curve, but that has led to some issues regarding Google’s AI products. Well, once OpenAI launches its search engine, there’s no doubt that Google could possibly prioritize SGE (search generative experience).

This is the company’s AI extension to Google Search that gives artificially generated responses to people’s search queries. It is a tool that’s going to greatly diminish the traffic going to millions of websites. SGE is currently in testing, but if OpenAI announces its search engine, there’s a possibility that Google could rush its product out the door.
