Nevis School District is identifying its greatest needs – Park Rapids Enterprise

Nevis Public School is a special place. Within our walls, our dedicated teachers and staff members help students become lifelong learners, critical thinkers and responsible citizens.

The Nevis area is unique in its commitment to championing our students and their success.

With about 600 students in preschool through grade 12, our district is small enough to know each student personally, yet large enough to provide a variety of educational opportunities.

On average, 20% of our seniors have earned their associate’s degree while still in high school. Innovative courses and certifications provide a jump start for student careers – for example, certified nursing assistants, boiler engineering and the construction trades. These are just a few of the reasons our district stands out.

To ensure the district can continue providing an excellent educational environment for our students, the Nevis School Board initiated a long-term facilities planning process at the start of 2024.

With a majority of the facility built in 1985, Nevis Public School is nearly 40 years old, and the needs of our students, staff, and community continue to evolve. Together, we must find a successful path forward.

One of the most important elements of planning for our district’s future is listening to our community. So far, we have held listening sessions with staff, parents, students and residents to gather feedback on the needs of our school facilities.

In addition, the district retained PreK-12 facility experts at ICS to conduct a demographics analysis to determine projected enrollment growth and an educational adequacy study to evaluate how the district’s facilities compare to the Minnesota Department of Education’s recommended standards.

In our conversations with residents so far, it’s clear that the Nevis community believes our district has outstanding faculty and staff, great education and extracurricular activities and a supportive, family-like environment. I am grateful for our community’s strong support of our schools.

Residents also identified challenges facing the district, such as the need for more classrooms, updated bathrooms, expanded space for Career and Technical Education and updates to the sports complex.

We will continue to listen carefully as staff, parents and residents contribute their insights.

In that spirit, I hope you will join us at a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 in the Nevis School cafeteria. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the results of the assessments we have completed so far, ask questions and provide input as our long-term plan takes shape.

In the meantime, feel free to reach out to me by email at gparks@nevis308.org or by phone at 218-652-3500.

I hope to see many of you on April 17.
