Most Luxembourg high schools will permit some smartphone use – Luxembourg Times

From the beginning of next month, most high schools in the Grand Duchy will start restricting the time and place that smartphones can be used by students on campus, the education ministry has said.

As a national policy, smartphone use will be prohibited during all secondary school classes beginning on 2 June. However, lycées have been able to set stricter policies after a community consultation.

Twenty-seven out of Luxembourg’s 38 high schools have introduced stricter rules, limiting use to non-classroom areas, like the cafeteria or school library, or during certain times of the day.

Six secondary schools adopted the minimum national regulations, the education ministry said on Monday.

Five high schools “opted for a strict prohibition of smartphones during the school day; students leave their phone [with a school official] in the morning and retrieve them after classes end,” the ministry said.

Smartphones were, in effect, fully banned from Luxembourg primary schools starting on 22 April.
