“You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.” This saying applies to many things in the world, and that especially goes for technology. In a joint interview between Jony Ive and Lauren Powell Jobs, the latter spoke about the dark side of technology.
In case you don’t know, Jony Ive is one of the main members working on a mysterious AI device that the tech world is hungry to find out about. He’s collaborating with other top minds such as Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. At this point, we know close to nothing about this device, even though it’s been in the planning stage for quite some time.
Since there’s so much talent behind this device, we’re pretty sure that it will succeed where all current AI devices have failed. We’ll just need to wait and see.
During an interview, Jony Ive spoke about the dark side of technology
“If you make something new, if you innovate, there will be consequences unforeseen, and some will be wonderful and some will be harmful.” Those are chilling words indeed, and they came from former Chief Design Officer at Apple, Jony Ive. He participated in an interview with Lauren Powell Jobs, the founder and president of the Emerson Collective.
Powell Jobs continued, “While some of the less positive consequences were unintentional, I still feel responsibility. And the manifestation of that is a determination to try and be useful.”
The dark side of technology manifests itself in many ways, and we witness it on a daily basis. For example, smartphones are extremely useful tools, but they can be extremely addictive. Social media is great for communication and marketing. However, it can also lead to the spread of misinformation. AI can be extremely useful for productivity, but it can also be harmful to many workers and creators.
There’s not much that we can do about this at this point. There are always going to be bad actors who use technology for nefarious purposes. The only thing we can do is continue to make good technology and hope for the best.
Powell Jobs stated that “We now know, unambiguously, that there are dark uses for certain types of technology,” she continues, “Certainly, technology wasn’t designed to have that result. But that is the sideways result.”
We got a little bit of information about the AI device
Jony Ive and Lauren Powell Jobs spilled a few drops of tea on the anticipated AI device during the interview. Ive’s company is called LoveFrom, and Jobs backed the company in 2019. So, we know that these two have a close relationship. We don’t know too many of the specifics, but rumor has it that Jobs did invest in Ive’s and Altman’s device.
One thing that Jobs implies is that the device is not designed to take on the iPhone or any of Apple’s devices. So, this tells us that they are not working on a premium smartphone. At this point, we don’t even know if it will be a smartphone or if it will merely be smartphone adjacent.
What we do know is that, when it does launch, it will be extremely interesting. There are some great minds behind this device, so it’s sure to shake things up.
