Instagram has been constantly adding new features to the platform to boost user engagement. Earlier this month, the social media platform expanded the Blends feature to more regions. Now, Instagram is rolling out support for 3:4 aspect ratio photos. For the uninitiated, that’s the same aspect ratio for most camera phones.
New 3:4 aspect ratio for photos on Instagram eliminates the hassle of cropping
Instagram first announced the support for the 3:4 aspect ratio for photos on its Creators Broadcast Channel. The platform noted, “Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the native format for most phone cameras. Going forward, when you upload a 3:4 image, it’ll now appear exactly as you shot it.”
Later, the platform’s CEO also shared the news via his Threads account. Now, you must be wondering how the new aspect ratio affects your photo uploads, right? As seen in the image below, the new 3:4 aspect ratio ensures that photos you upload to Instagram will be presented as such in-stream.

Previously, the social media platform used to stretch them to fit with previous formatting requirements. In short, the new change ensures accurate translation of the original photo. It’s worth noting that Instagram’s new 3:4 aspect ratio support works with both single-photo posts and carousels. It ensures that users have the flexibility across different post types.
You can still upload in previously supported formats
Although Instagram has introduced new 3:4 aspect ratio support, you could still share photos in 1:1 (square) and 4:5 aspect ratios. If you’ve been annoyed all this time because you had to crop and adjust the image to fit Instagram’s format requirements, this change comes as a lifesaver.
Now, you can simply click photos from your phone’s camera and upload them as they are via the Instagram app. This update also ensures that you don’t have to compromise on image quality or composition.
