After launching
AI Overviews
in Google Search last year, Google’s next major
Gemini feature
for its popular search engine has arrived.
At its recent Google I/O event, Google announced that its new AI Mode for Google Search is now being rolled out to all users in the US. Google began testing AI Mode in search earlier this year as part of its experimental Labs program, but it will soon be available for everyone “over the coming weeks” with no sign-up required.
Google’s AI Mode is a new search tool that utilizes Gemini to simplify complex questions into detailed, conversational search results. It reminds me of
ChatGPT search
, which OpenAI introduced last year. According to Google, AI Mode represents its “most powerful AI search, with more advanced reasoning and multimodality.”

Love it or hate it, Google Chrome is the biggest web browser in the world. The app features personalized news articles, quick links to your favourite sites, downloads, Google Search and more.

AI Mode breaks down your searches
It can help you purchase tickets for events
AI Mode is designed for people who want to ask complex and layered questions in Google Search, such as comparing their favorite sports teams or planning a holiday. AI Mode employs what Google calls the “query fan-out technique,” which breaks down a user’s question into various subtopics and conducts multiple search queries on their behalf to provide a detailed response.
In an example provided by Google, a user searched for the best things to do in Nashville for a weekend with friends, focusing on specific interests like being foodies and enjoying chill music. AI Mode then explores the web to find the best options for the user, presenting different dining choices and venues for listening to chill music.
Users can access AI Mode through its dedicated tab in Google Search and within the search bar of the Google app.
Google also demonstrated AI Mode’s agentic capabilities by helping users find tickets to events, such as a baseball game. In one instance, AI Mode assisted in locating affordable ticket options for an upcoming Cincinnati Reds game, sifting through various ticket websites and showing the user the best options to consider.

AI Mode also features a Live Search mode, which enables users to have a real-time conversation with Google Search while using their phone camera with Google Lens. “With Search Live, you can talk back-and-forth with Search about what you see in real-time, using your camera.”
…if you have a simple, straightforward question, traditional Google Search will suffice, but if your question is more layered and requires deeper thinking, that’s where AI Mode comes into play.
Users can access AI Mode through its dedicated tab in Google Search and within the search bar of the Google app. In the future, Google plans to introduce personal context for AI Mode, which will provide users with “personalized suggestions based on your past searches.” Google indicates that AI Mode will notify users when it’s utilizing personal context to assist with a search, and users can manage their personalization settings at any time to control what AI Mode utilizes.
Essentially, if you have a simple, straightforward question, traditional Google Search will suffice, but if your question is more layered and requires deeper thinking, that’s where AI Mode comes into play.
AI Mode will be launched in Google Search for all users in the US in the “coming weeks.” Google’s last major AI feature for search, AI Overviews, has faced its
fair share of controversy
over the past year due to providing inaccurate information, so it will be interesting to see the response to AI Mode as it becomes widely available. As always, when it comes to AI searches, it is usually best to double-check any information it provides.
