In development for years now, Google’s light theme for Android Auto appears to be right around the corner, and the company has just shown it off for the first time.
Work on a light theme for Android Auto first surfaced back in 2023, but it was rough and clearly far from being finished. Recently, though, updates to the experience surfaced through a new version of the Android Auto app. It’s still not live, but it’s clearly getting close.
Surrounding its I/O 2025 announcements, Google has also now officially shown off Android Auto’s light theme.
Through developer documentation posted this week, Google shows what Android Auto looks like on various display sizes both in dark and light themes. This includes the main dashboard, mockup apps, and the Android Auto settings menu.
While there’s not a whole lot new to see here beyond seeing what messages look like in the light theme, the simple fact that it exists publicly shows that Google is getting really close to making this new theme available. The company’s developer post doesn’t acknowledge the light theme, though, and developers very likely need to be involved in optimizing their apps for this color scheme.

What do you think of Android Auto’s light theme?
