Germany's The Mobility House gets investment from RheinEnergie to use electric cars as grid storage – Silicon Canals

Munich-based The Mobility House, a company that provides mobility energy solutions, announced on Wednesday, April 24, that it has secured investment from RheinEnergie, a Cologne-based energy service provider.

However, the exact details about the funding were not disclosed.

The announcement comes four months after appointing Herbert Diess, the former CEO of the Volkswagen Group, as its new Executive Chairman of the Board.

RheinEnergie is an energy service provider responsible for supplying energy and drinking water to around 2.5 million people, industry, trade, and commerce.

In addition to energy and drinking water, the company offers numerous energy solutions for private individuals, commerce, and industry.

“This strategic alliance is an important building block for us, especially for our customers. With The Mobility House by our side, we gain expertise and significantly expand our scope, particularly in digital and interconnected services related to real estate and mobility,” says Andreas Feicht, Chairman of the Board of RheinEnergie.

RheinEnergie x The Mobility House: Vehicle-to-Grid Technology

The collaboration between RheinEnergie and The Mobility House marks a significant step towards bridging the gap between the energy and mobility sectors.

The new partnership between RheinEnergie and The Mobility House supports the goal of intelligently integrating vehicle batteries into the grid.

The vehicle-to-grid technology concept uses electric vehicles not only as means of transportation but also as mobile energy storage units that can feed energy back into the grid when needed.

The Mobility House’s technology portfolio focuses on transforming mobile and stationary electric vehicle batteries into aggregated storage and flexibility potential.

The collaboration between the two companies offers RheinEnergie many benefits, which will be demonstrated in the future through a special offer for electric vehicles.

As part of this strategic partnership, RheinEnergie will expand its offering in particular in the energy supply for households and electromobility in the future.

Additionally, RheinEnergie will be introducing a new electricity tariff for individuals this year that can significantly reduce charging costs by hundreds of dollars annually. The Mobility House will provide the necessary technological components, while RheinEnergie will remain the reliable energy supplier and direct contractual partner.

The Mobility House: Emissions-free energy and mobility future

Founded in 2009 by Thomas Raffeiner and led by CEO Robert Hienz, The Mobility House aims to create an emissions-free energy and mobility future.

To integrate electric vehicles into the power grid, the company has created an “expansive” partner ecosystem, which includes electric vehicle charger makers, 1,000+ installation partners, 80+ energy providers, and automobile manufacturers like Audi and Tesla.

The intelligent Charging and Energy Management system — ChargePilot, and the underlying EV Aggregation Platform enable customers and partners to integrate electric vehicles into the grid for optimised and future-proof operations.

The German company globally manages more than 1,600 charging locations intelligently through the Charging and Energy Management system ChargePilot.

Since 2015, the company has been involved in more than eight international V2G pilot projects, including the latest Replicable V2X Deployment For Schools (RVXDS) project, which will implement bidirectional charging at four California school locations.

In 2024, the company will launch the first commercial V2G service on the European market together with Mobilize, a Renault Group brand.

Currently, The Mobility House has more than 250 employees across its operations in Munich, Zurich, and Belmont, California.

“We are pleased to welcome RheinEnergie as an investor and partner. Together, we can accelerate the realisation of our vision of ‘zero zero’, charging electric cars for free and emission-free, making it more accessible to a wider audience,” says Thomas Raffeiner, CEO of The Mobility House.
