The Genesis hybrid race car GMR-001 has officially been revealed as the brand’s entry into IMSA GTP, supported by Genesis Magma and developed with Hyundai Motorsport.
The prototype made its debut at the 2025 New York Auto Show, carrying Genesis’ signature design cues and a hybrid system engineered for endurance racing.
The GMR-001 is the first motorsport project under the new Genesis Magma performance division.
It marks a strategic shift for Genesis as it moves from road-focused luxury to full-fledged competition.

Genesis hybrid race car revealed in New York
The GMR-001 is a full-scale prototype built for LMDh regulations, making it eligible for both IMSA GTP and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Its design includes visual cues from production models, such as the signature split headlights, but the chassis and aero are built for pure function.

The car rides on an ORECA chassis, one of four approved under LMDh rules.
Genesis presented the car not as a concept, but as a race-ready project.
It is an assertive move for a brand still establishing itself in the global performance conversation.
Powertrain borrows from Hyundai WRC
The GMR-001 uses a hybrid system paired with a new V8 combustion engine.
While the layout differs from Hyundai’s WRC engine, around 60 percent of the internal components are shared.
This helps reduce development time and leverages proven durability from rally competition.

Hyundai Motorsport confirmed the first engine fired in early 2025, following months of simulation, testing and precision assembly.
The V8 is paired with standardized hybrid components used across the GTP grid, including a Bosch motor and Fortescue Zero battery system.
Genesis Magma links racing to road cars
The GMR-001 is the first motorsport project tied to Genesis Magma, a sub-brand launched in 2024 for performance-focused vehicles.
Magma is already behind models like the GV60 Magma and GV80 Coupe Magma, both of which feature design and powertrain upgrades over the standard cars.

The race car helps connect the dots between concept and execution.
Genesis is not just showing off performance on paper, but using racing as a development tool for future road models.
Genesis enters a competitive field
IMSA GTP is a stacked category that includes factory entries from Porsche, BMW, Acura and Cadillac.
Genesis enters without racing history, but with solid momentum from its production car division and the technical backing of Hyundai’s motorsport arm.

The GMR-001 is not guaranteed to dominate, but it gives Genesis a seat at the table.
That matters in a space where performance identity is earned, not inherited.
Genesis has quickly established itself in the luxury car market.
Now, with the GMR-001 hybrid race car and the Genesis Magma division, it is entering racing with a clear sense of purpose.
If the same pace carries over to the track, it could be a faster rise than anyone expects.
