A patent filed by Samsung has revealed that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 may use AI to monitor atrial fibrillation. The Galaxy Watch series is one of the strongest competitors to the Apple Watch, so it is exciting to see Samsung working hard to improve its Galaxy Watch lineup.

Accurate monitoring of atrial fibrillation could potentially save lives

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is a condition that causes irregular and rapid heartbeats. One may have AFib if they experience chest pain, dizziness, and palpitations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that atrial fibrillation contributes to over 158,000 deaths in the US yearly, with the condition hospitalizing over 400,000 people.

One of the biggest selling points of smartwatches is the potential to save lives because they pack a lot of health-related features. If Samsung can bring accurate atrial fibrillation monitoring to the Galaxy Watch 7, there is a huge potential for lives to be saved.

Samsung believes the Galaxy Watch 7 can beat what the market currently offers.

According to Sammobile, Samsung intends to detect atrial fibrillation through the use of a generative AI algorithm that translates photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals into electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Wareable says that companies like Apple and Fitbit, already allow you to monitor atrial fibrillation.

However, Samsung argues that current methods of monitoring for atrial fibrillation in existing consumer wearables are not necessarily accurate. It claims that its algorithm for detecting atrial fibrillation is more accurate than the competition’s.

Bringing AI to the Galaxy Watch 7 is a great strategy for Samsung

AI has become a hot topic among big tech companies and Samsung is no exception. The South Korean giant has joined companies like Google to introduce AI into its software and hardware ecosystem.
