Amazon will soon start testing humanoid robots for delivering packages, The Information reports. The company is completing construction of a “humanoid park”, which is an insider obstacle course at one of its offices, in San Francisco.
Amazon is planning to send humanoid robots to your door, with your package
Amazon will test humanoid robots there soon. The company is also developing software for humanoid robots that could eventually take the jobs of delivery workers. We’re talking about AI software here, of course.
The company is planning to use hardware from other firms in its tests, at least for now. Reuters did reach out for a comment from Amazon, regarding all this, but it did not receive a response. Granted, it was outside Amazon’s regular business hours.
What’s interesting is that Amazon, yesterday, demonstrated how stockroom robots, delivery people, and its warehouses will all benefit from AI. That combo should speed up package deliveries, basically.
There are, of course, several ways to look at this situation. On one hand, there are plenty of delivery workers out there who do their job extremely well and don’t deserve to be replaced. That’s what this project is about, though, as a final goal.
On the flip side, many would say that it’s just the natural course of things. Some jobs that humans are doing at this point in time will be taken over by robots at some point in the future.
Things are changing… fast
That’s a debate that I’ve personally been in plenty of times in the last couple of years, and there’s never a clear consensus. There are arguments for both sides, but one thing is for sure, things are changing at an incredibly fast pace. We simply live in such times, for better or for worse. We’ll report back if Amazon shares some worthy official information regarding this report. As a reminder, Amazon is also working on drone deliveries.
