First Bus has announced that it has unveiled the UK’s inaugural bus depot featuring consumer electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities. The cutting-edge charging hub is situated at First Bus’ newly established Summercourt depot in Cornwall.
The Summercourt charging hub sets a precedent as the foremost of its kind in the bus sector, extending access to rapid electric charging infrastructure for electric cars and vans directly to the public. Strategically located along the crucial A30 corridor – a prominent tourist route into Cornwall – the hub promises to allay EV range anxiety among drivers traversing the county.
Comprising eight rapid chargers, the hub operates on a convenient “turn up and charge” basis, facilitating seamless payment via contactless credit card at 69p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) without necessitating an app or registration. With rapid charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW), an average family car can reach an 80% charge in just around 30 minutes.
Moreover, the Summercourt hub boasts extended operational hours from 06:00 to 22:00, seven days a week, complemented by on-site amenities including refreshments, restrooms and a comfortable waiting area. This comprehensive facility underscores First Bus’ commitment to nurturing Cornwall’s transition to electric vehicles, mitigating emissions, and fostering cleaner air for local communities.

The ambitious 12-month project has been fuelled by a £1 million investment from First Bus, affirming the company’s dedication to enhancing local electric charging infrastructure and catering to the evolving needs of the community. Notably, the charging hub at Summercourt is available for use by local enterprises, aligning with First Bus’ successful model implemented in Glasgow and Leicester, where organisations like Open Reach, DPD and Police Scotland leverage the operator’s infrastructure to facilitate their transition to EV fleets.
