Non-Premium vs. Premium Brotato
Firstly, there are two versions of Brotato in the digital stores: the traditional and the premium. We’ll list the differences between them, but this Brotato Ultimate Game Guide will primarily focus on features present in the non-premium version, as it encompasses the majority of players.
The Premium Brotato edition doesn’t require watching advertisement videos when you want to reroll choices, which helps to have a more seamless gameplay. It also unlocks new characters through achievements, similar to the Steam version.
The Non-Premium Brotato edition has Ads to reroll choices and requires the use of Spuds, an in-game currency, to unlock characters and other items. However, the Non-Premium has a freemium edition of sorts called the VIP.
If you unlock the VIP, you get a whole bunch of bonuses to your gameplay, such as five stats choices, five upgrade options in the shop, free rerolls and revives, and more. Some players complain that the VIP version makes Brotato too easy, so keep that in mind.
Gameplay Loop
In Brotato, you control a Rambo potato that can wield up to 6 weapons. Every weapon auto-fires against enemies, and every enemy will automatically walk toward you, dealing damage via contact, shooting, charging, or any other necessary means.
Your duty is to move around an enclosed arena, killing enemies, collecting materials and experience while surviving waves and emerging victorious at the end of them.
Each character, weapon, item, and consumable has a different effect, which we will describe in more detail in other sections. The gameplay loop is simple but addictive. With over a hundred weapons, each new playthrough becomes an entirely unique experience.
Two Play Modes
Brotato offers two gameplay modes: survival and classic. Both play similarly but have different outcomes. Each mode has a maximum of 20 waves, and each wave can last from 20 to 90 seconds.
Aliens from all sides will come at you, and your goal is simple: survive. But hunting and killing aliens is also essential since they drop experience to level up and materials to acquire new weapons and items.
Wave 20 presents a mighty boss. You win the wave if you defeat the boss or survive for the required time. Once you achieve the goal, you move on to the next phase.
Survival Mode
The Survival mode is separated by stages. Each stage consists of several waves, and you can move on to the next stage after winning. This mode follows a standard style in other mobile games and provides a clear roadmap for your game progress.
Even if you unlock characters, some of them can only be used if you complete a specific stage in Survival mode.
Classic Mode
In Classic mode, all your characters are available. Albeit a different name, the mode is identical to Survival, only lacking the stages. You select the mode, a character, and then a difficulty level. If you choose endless waves, you’ll play until you can’t anymore.
If you play with a maximum of 20 waves, the next difficulty will be unlocked every time you win its predecessor. It’s a mode better for testing builds, trying out new characters, and having fun once you’ve finished Survival Mode.
Brotato Stats Explained
Before you embark on your journey to exterminate all the aliens, it’s crucial to know what each stat does, as the game doesn’t go out of its way to explain them to players. Understanding the functionality of each stat is essential when choosing your character, weapons, and items.
Some are straightforward, while others are more obscure.
- Max HP: Increases your overall health. When it reaches zero, you die.
- Life Regeneration: You heal 1 HP every x seconds. Every point in Life Regeneration increases HP recovery speed.
- Life Steal: Your attacks have a chance to heal you for 1 HP. Every point increases the odds.
- Damage: Attacks deal increased damage. This stat doesn’t affect engineering turrets or mines.
- Melee Damage: Increases all melee weapons’ damage.
- Ranged Damage: Increases all ranged weapons’ damage.
- Elemental Damage: Increases all elemental damage.
- Attack Speed: Your weapons attack faster. This stat doesn’t affect engineering turrets or mines.
- Crit Chance: Every weapon has an increased chance to deal a critical hit, increasing damage according to each weapon’s multiplier.
- Engineering: Increases the power of all your structures.
- Range: Increases the maximum range of all your weapons. Melee weapons travel farther, but their cooldown is also longer.
- Armor: Reduces enemies’ damage. Every point of armor reduces damage by 6.66%.
- Dodge: You have a chance to dodge attacks.
- Speed: Increases your move speed.
- Luck: You have more luck finding items or consumables when killing enemies. Increases the odds of rare weapons and items in the shop.
- Harvesting: You earn more experience and materials at a wave’s end, increasing by 5% every time it activates.
Characters & Weapons
After choosing a mode, you must pick a character to wreak havoc on the aliens. Each character has a specialization expressed in their biography. The initial characters are experts in ranged and melee weapons, for example. But as you play, you unlock characters with bonuses in luck, elemental damage, or engineering, among others.
After choosing a character, it’s time to select an initial weapon. Your first weapon will be in line with your character’s attributes. Melee characters will have only melee weapons to choose from, while ranged characters will have guns and other long-range armaments.
Brotato is the only potato capable of carrying six weapons at once and firing them simultaneously. You can acquire new weapons between waves during the playthrough to strengthen your arsenal. When all six slots are occupied, you can combine two identical weapons to enhance them while freeing up space for new weapons.
We suggest combining weapons only when your slots are full. Although evolutions are stronger, two level one weapons are more worthwhile than one level two weapon, for example.
Weapons have four rarity tiers: common, uncommon, rare, and legendary. They are represented by the colors white, blue, purple, and orange, respectively.
Don’t be afraid to recycle weapons that don’t fit your build. They will give you some materials back and open up slots for better ones.
Weapon Classes
Weapons have 15 distinct classes. As you accumulate weapons of the same class, new bonuses are unlocked. Some weapons belong to more than one class. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have an internal tracker showing how many weapons of the same class you have, so it’s a manual task.
Here is a list of bonuses for each weapon class in Brotato:
- Blade: Increases melee damage and life steal.
- Blunt: Increases armor and max HP but decreases speed.
- Elemental: Increases elemental damage.
- Ethereal: Increases dodge chance but decreases armor.
- Explosive: Increases explosion radius.
- Gun: Increases range stats.
- Heavy: Increases damage stats.
- Legendary: Reduces your max HP.
- Medical: Increases HP regeneration stats.
- Medieval: Increases armor and dodge.
- Precise: Increases critical chance.
- Primitive: Increases max HP.
- Support: Increases Harvesting stats.
- Tool: Increases Engineering stats.
- Unarmed: Increases dodge chance.
Weapons that roll in the shop also have a 15% chance to match a weapon’s class you already own. Try to pick six weapons of the same class to enjoy every bonus they have to offer.
Leveling Up and Materials
As you kill enemies, they drop experience, which you must collect to increase your level. However, even if you level up during a wave, you won’t be able to reap the rewards immediately.
You level up at the end of the waves and can choose which stats you want to enhance. The thumbs-up icon next to the attributes is the recommended choice by the game, but don’t hesitate to make your own choices and builds.
Every stat will come with a different border color, similar to weapon rarity. If they do, it means that stats will be increased by a higher value. Still, take heed of which stats contribute to your overall build. There’s no point in taking a legendary melee damage increase if you only wear ranged weapons.
Along with experience, enemies also drop materials, a currency used to acquire new weapons and items at the end of waves. It’s essential to gather as much as possible. Being proactive and hunting enemies is better than avoiding them, as each wave has a time limit. Ideally, collect the most resources before time runs out.
Once the wave ends, all the materials dropped will be counted towards your harvesting total and accounted for as materials fell in the next wave, so collect whenever possible. Acquire all the experience proactively as you kill enemies; otherwise, you won’t level up.
Acquiring Items
With materials in hand, you receive a batch of items to acquire between waves. It’s best to focus on items that complement your character and weapons. If you want an item but don’t have the available material at the moment, press the lock tooltip to reserve the item for the next wave.
During waves, some larger monsters or objects, like trees and boxes, will appear. Defeating these enemies has a high chance of dropping an orange item with powerful effects. Any item acquired during the wave can be equipped or recycled in exchange for materials.
The rarity of items is represented in the same way as weapons, through the colors white, blue, purple, and orange, gradually improving as the level increases. It’s possible to accumulate the same item repeatedly, boosting your attributes to the max.
Talent Cards
Brotato has a mini-gacha system called Talent Cards. These cards can be equipped and provide additional stats to your character.
To draw new Talent Cards, you need to spend Spuds. There are four levels: green, blue, purple, and orange. When drawing a Talent Card of a specific rarity, there’s a chance it may come in a higher rarity than the one you chose. There’s also a possibility of unlocking the next rarity tier for drawing.
As new Talent Card tiers are unlocked, the Spuds investment increases, but it’s guaranteed that the card will come with the rarity of the tier drawn. The investment is high, but it pays off in the long run.
If you acquire many duplicate Talent Cards or ones that don’t fit your build, you can use them as fodder to upgrade your main cards, further strengthening your stats.
The Totem
Besides Spuds, another currency you frequently acquire is Fries, which is quite ominous because you can’t have fries without peeling and boiling potatoes.
Fries are used to upgrade the Totem, a feature in the main menu that increases the initial stats of characters in the Survival Mode. You can acquire Fries by playing, completing daily and weekly missions, or watching ads within the Totem menu.
Daily, Weekly, and Achievement Missions
A practical and natural way to acquire new resources, like Spuds, is to complete daily, weekly, or achievement missions in Brotato. Many daily tasks involve spending Spuds, which may seem controversial, but it’s not.
A practical way to spend Spuds in small doses is to draw more Talent Cards. Other missions involve unlocking new characters, completing stages in the Survival Mode, or upgrading the Totem.
