Better than Apple AirTag: the best Find My trackers – AppleInsider

Apple’s Find My network goes far beyond a lost iPhone or AirTags. Here are the best third-party Find My devices on the market, so you don’t lose anything ever again.

The AirTag is a helpful half dollar-sized tracker that easy to slip into your bag. The compact nature of the device also gives it few mounting options without additional accessories.

Fortunately, Apple also allows third-parties to create their own products that integrate into Find My the same way. These devices have various form factors, so there’s now a way to track just about anything you own, without using an AirTag.

All these devices show in the Find My app next to your AirTags and have the same features including left behind alerts, lost mode, tracking preventions, and more.

Find My items can leverage the large Apple user base should you ever misplace your device. Apple even recently expanded the functionality to including link sharing, perfect for lost luggage.

The biggest difference is that third-party devices can’t use Precision Finding to help guide you right to them. This isn’t a big deal though, as built in speakers are more useful in our experience.

Here are our favorite devices that integrate natively into Find My and why they may be better for your needs than Apple’s own trackers.

Rolling Square AirNotch Pro

If you are looking to attach an AirTag or Find My device to your keys or maybe even your backpack, you’ve got a few options. There are holders for AirTag or basic third party ones with key ring holes.

But we’ve found one that does just a bit better. It’s the Rolling Square AirNotch Pro.

It’s a key ring with Find My built in. The body is aluminum with durable black plastic on the front and back.

It’s sealed, making it durable, impact proof, and sports IP68 water and dust resistance. Great for something coming with you every day.

A small oval device with circular patterns and a black ring on a white surface, set against a blurred pink and purple background.
The AirNotch Pro is a more powerful AirTag with dual, louder speakers, glow-in-the-dark accents, and extra-long battery life

It uses two CR2032 batteries yielding 20 months of battery life. Almost double all the other trackers that use a single battery — including AirTags themselves.

It has two outward facing speakers — one on the front, one on the back. That way no matter which way it is facing, it’s about guaranteed one of the speakers will be clear.

And, it glows in the dark! As a Swiss company, they designed it after timepieces that have luminescence on the dial.

There are strips on both sides that glow, making it much easier to find when dropped under a table or even at the bottom of your bag.

The AirNotch Pro is available for $39.00.

Knog Scout

As we mentioned, Apple recently made it easier to track luggage with airlines in a recent update. Instead of putting an AirTag in your suitcase, consider the Knog Scout tag.

It comes in a bunch of fun colors and connects to your bag with a locking stainless steel security cable. Once attached, you’re good to go and no one can take it off without some bolt cutters or the included removal tool.

The Scout luggage tack can’t be removed and has a security mode

It charges over USB-C which is great, because you can just top it off before you travel. That way you’re good the whole trip.

On top of the regular find my stuff – left behind alerts, playing a sound, lost mode – it also has NFC and a QR code for people to help return your bag to you.

And, a security mode helps prevent it getting stolen. It turns it into a giant motion sensor and if someone moves your bag while it’s armed, it will trigger a siren to ward them off.

Find it on Amazon for $59.95.

VanMoof bikes

It’s a pretty common tactic among bike owners to mount an AirTag to their bike. Ether to the center rail, under the seat, or hiding somewhere else.

Alternatively, you can just get a bike with Find My built right in. The first bike to do this was the VanMoof X3 electric bike.

Black bicycle on lush green grass, featuring a sleek frame, straight handlebars, and disc brakes, with a comfortable seat and fenders on both wheels.
The VanMoof bike was one of the first third-party products to get Find y support

At this point, this bike is a few years old. The A5 and S5, the currently shipping models, offer this feature too.

Since it’s built in, there’s nothing for a thief to remove. If someone steals your bike or you forget where you parked it, the whole thing is a tracker.

Electric bikes are very prevalent in cities, which is also where AirTags work due to the large number of people. We love this idea and think every electric commuter city bike should have this.

They’re currently available to order in the EU for 3,398 euros.

Journey Reevus

If you’ve ever forgotten a water bottle, you can imagine what inspired the Journey Reevus. This durable stainless steel durable water bottle has a tracker built into its lid.

The puck is removable and rechargeable

It’s a dual-layer water bottle to keep your liquids cold for nearly a day. The top is a durable molded lid with a magnetically-connected puck in the center.

The puck can be removed and placed on any MagSafe or Qi charger to power up. It will get you roughly 3-4 months of use on a single charge.

As a bonus, the top ring which is a helpful handle, also doubles as a MagSafe mount for your iPhone. Lift it up and place your iPhone on it.

You can take your water bottle with you and use it as a stand to watch a video, record yourself, or do a workout class.

Thanks to the native features of Find My, you’ll get an alert if you ever leave your water bottle in the car or at the gym ever again.

It’s available on the Journey website for $89.99 in three colors.

Ember Travel Mug 2+

In a similar vein, we have the Ember Travel Mug 2+. Unlike with a regular Ember coffee cup, the travel version travels with you.

If you’ve ever worked in an office, you probably have taken in a water bottle or a coffee mug and forgot it there. Thanks to Find My, Ember will let you know before you leave without it.

Keep your coffee warm all day and never leave your mug behind

And if you misplace it, you can track it down. Personally, we’ve misplaced quite a few water bottles and travel mugs so this and the previously-mentioned Reevus bottle are great additions to our kits.

For those unfamiliar, the Ember Travel Mug 2+ also helps keep your coffee, tea, or other beverages warm. it has a built in heater where you can dial in the temperature exactly where you want it.

If kept on its charging coaster, it will last all day or you can get a few hours of use while traveling in the car.

The Ember Travel Mug 2+ is an Apple Store exclusive where you can buy it for $199.

Twelve South PlugBug

Finally, we have the Twelve South PlugBug. A product so smart, we’re shocked it took so long for it to launch.

Basically, it’s a powerful wall charger with find my tracking built in. There are two versions: a 50W model and a 120W model.

Two white, rectangular devices with red edges, standing upright on a white surface, against a blurred, purple background.
The 50W and 120W PlugBug GaN chargers have Find My

The 50W has two USB-C ports while the 120W has four. All ports are equivalent, meaning you don’t have to worry about high speed and low speed ports.

Just plug your stuff in and you’re set. The higher wattage model is nearly enough to fast charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

If you are traveling abroad, you may opt for the travel version of either. That gives you a carrying case plus various travel adapters.

Just like with the water bottle and coffee cup, this is just as much about leaving the item behind as it is finding it. We’ve left several chargers behind in Airbnbs and hotel rooms.

You’re placing them behind desks or tables, inherently hidden as you’re packing up. Especially if you have a fast 120W charger you don’t want to be leaving that behind.

PlugBug is compact, easily fitting behind furniture and use GaN tech to stay extra small. These have the usual left behind alerts, tracking functionality, and lost mode.

They are powered by coin cell batteries that should give you an entire year of use before they need to be swapped out. Power requirements prohibit them from using a rechargeable battery, which is the only real downside.

While we were preparing this guide, we had to use the Find My app to find this charger in our office to pack it up. That’s a perfect endorsement of its abilities.

You can buy the 50W or 120W PlugBug on Amazon for $42.99 or $93.33 respectively.
