After years of watching Samsung from the sidelines, Apple is getting ready to jump onto the foldable bandwagon. The company is rumored to launch a foldable iPhone in 2026, and we’re also hearing rumors about a foldable iPad. Now, the latest rumors claim that Apple will kick off production on a large foldable Mac in 2027.
Large, foldable Mac coming in 2027
This tip is courtesy of analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been fairly accurate with his claims in the past. According to Kuo, Apple will begin mass production of a large, foldable Mac in 2027, meaning we’ve got a couple of years to go. This also means that things are subject to change.
For example, depending on how well its foldable iPhone is received, Apple may or may not proceed with plans for a foldable Mac. If it realizes that customers aren’t biting, or if the demand for a foldable Mac isn’t there, it will shelve the project. This Mac is also expected to be huge, with an 18.8-inch display.
This would make it the largest laptop Apple has ever built. Right now, that honor goes to the MacBook Pro, which is available in a 16-inch option. Apple did come close to 18 inches in the past. Older MacBook Pros had the option of a 17-inch display before Apple discontinued it.
We are curious what the computer could look like, but maybe recent launches by Apple’s competition could clue us in.
Other foldable laptops
Apple isn’t alone in trying to create foldable laptops. Huawei launched its own foldable laptop, the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, at Computex 2025. We’re also hearing rumors that Amazon is looking into the form factor as well. We’ve already seen some older examples from Lenovo and ASUS.
However, none of these computers have become mainstream yet. While they’re exciting to look at from a tech perspective, functionally, it’s not too different from a regular laptop. Sure, it might pack a larger display, but it kind of kills the point of having a laptop if you have to bring around an external keyboard.
Plus, let’s not forget about pricing. The cost of these displays alone are extremely expensive. Add on the “Apple tax” and we’d hate to think how much a large, foldable Mac could cost.
