Android Auto's upcoming light mode shown off in Google design demo – Android Police

Summary

  • Android Auto’s upcoming light theme makes an appearance in Figma.
  • While we get a glimpse of what’s to come, there’s no word yet on when it will arrive.
  • The wait’s been long as we’ve heard rumors about this since 2023.

The best thing about Android Auto is that it continually receives updates and improves your in-vehicle experience. We know that Google has big future plans for the experience, allowing compatible devices to browse the web and even watch videos.

Keeping safety front of mind

With that said, it’s always the quality of life improvements that manage to have the biggest impact. And while we knew it was coming at some point, Android Auto’s light theme is once again making an appearance, bringing us one step closer to a new visual update.

For those bright days

A post on Figma gives us a glimpse of what to expect when Google eventually brings the light theme back to Android Auto (via 9to5Google). While it seems like something simple, Google has been at this for some time, with work on a new light theme surfacing as early as 2023.

Of course, early adopters of Android Auto will remember that the light theme was always just a thing, before the major overhaul that saw it removed back in 2019. While it isn’t essential, it does help to make things easier to see, especially during bright days.

Now, all this news doesn’t mean that we’re getting a new light theme soon. This just goes to show that it is being worked on and gives us a small look at what to expect when it finally finds its way to devices. For the most part, things look pretty clean, as expected.

As far as other quality of life changes, a report from last week shows that we could be getting revamped media controls, which could make it easier to navigate menus. Again, another small change that could have a huge impact on how we use the app in our vehicles.

While it’s a great tool to access while we’re on the road, there’s still a lot desired from the experience, some of which can be quite frustrating. Luckily, it’s all just software, which means that Google can take its sweet time making improvements, which gives us something to look forward to.
