T-Mobile has finally started sending out settlement checks to its users affected by a massive data breach in 2021. Earlier, T-Mobile announced that it would send out these payments in April. However, they only began reaching customers over the weekend. Interestingly, many T-Mobile customers affected by the data breach are receiving more than they originally expected.
T-Mobile sending payments to users impacted by data breach
T-Mobile has started notifying its users impacted by the massive breach about their payments. The telecom operator is sending some users a virtual prepaid Mastercard, while paying others via direct deposits into their Zelle accounts. The mode of payment depends on the option you selected while submitting the claim.
“As of May 30, 2025, all court proceedings are complete, and the distribution of settlement payments has begun. Distribution to valid claimants will occur over the following several weeks,” mentions the T-Mobile settlement website.
T-Mobile paying more than originally announced
It’s worth mentioning that T-Mobile earlier announced that consumers who spent money to mitigate the impact of the data breach will get up to $25,000. The company informed others to expect $25, or $100 if they lived in California, on August 1, 2021. However, many T-Mobile users have reported on Reddit that they are getting a higher amount than originally expected.
A couple of T-Mobile users posted on Reddit that they received $56.54, which is more than double the $25 promised. So, it’s not clear how much T-Mobile is paying out to the affected users. The company said the payment should cover any costs that impacted users may have incurred.
T-Mobile aims to regain the trust of affected consumers through the data breach settlement. The payments started reaching customers soon after users discovered that the T-Life app has a screen recording feature. T-Mobile recently responded that the app records data on the screen to gather important data about how people use it.
