Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to announce the reopening of a runway at Newark airport – News 12 – New Jersey

With summer vacation near, a runway at Newark Liberty International Airport is set to reopen today.

The announcement is 13 days ahead of schedule.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is scheduled to hold a news conference this afternoon to speak about the progress.

There was pressure to get the runway completed as quickly as possible because of all the recent issues causing delays and cancellations at the airport.

There’s an air traffic controller shortage and tech problems on top of the runway being down.

The runway construction was planned to meet the FAA safety standards, according to the Port Authority.

Runways are typically repaved every 10 years.

This 11,000-foot-long Runway was last rehabbed in 2014 and was showing significant signs of wear.

It was shutdown on April 15.

The FAA reduced the number of flights in and out of Newark to 56 flights per hour. That is expected that to rise now that the runway is reopening.

However, The Port Authority says “To fully complete the rehabilitation project by the end of 2025, closures of Runway 4L-22R will continue on weeknights through the end of the year, and on weekends, September through December.”
