Much of the time, specs and performance matter a lot. That’s not always the case when it comes to streaming devices, as they’re not expected to perform any particularly taxing tasks. However, something should be said when a $30 streaming device can go toe-to-toe with streamers more than three times its price. The Walmart Onn 4K Plus was just put through the wringer, and its performance is pretty damn good for its price.
There are a million and one streaming devices that are being launched by a thousand and one companies. However, a few devices stand out from the rest. These include the Nvidia Shield streamers, Amazon Fire streamers, and Google TV streamer. While these devices aren’t expected to run Genshin Impact or use generative AI models, they’re overall performance can affect the experience. We’ve all run into cheaply made streamers that lag and crash while just trying to stream The Good Place on Netflix.
The Walmart Onn 4K Plus is a performance beast
This is one of the subjects that can be a bit nuanced, to say the least. We are talking about benchmark scores. They don’t accurately paint a picture of how a device will perform. Synthetic benchmarks only show a number depending on how a device will ostensibly perform.
In any case, the Walmart Onn 4K Plus was able to score some pretty high numbers through Geekbench. The numbers themselves may not be super impressive, but you have to put them into perspective. The device scored 1,146 for the single-core score and 3,131 for the multicore score. That’s pretty significant because those are the types of numbers that flagship smartphones were hitting just a few years ago.
Also, we’re talking about a device that’s meant to run a TV platform. Running such a lightweight platform with decent hardware lends to an overall great experience. What makes this better is the fact that this device only costs $30. To put that into perspective, the Google TV Streamer, which scored 917 and 2,527 for the single-core and multicore scores, respectively, costs $100.
The Google TV streamer was reviewed highly for its performance. So, if Walmart’s offering is punching so far above Google’s, then we can surmise that it’s quite a powerhouse.
Looking at the chart provided by AFTV News, we see that the Amazon Fire TV Cube 3 snagged the highest score of the tested devices. The Onn 4K Plus’ single-core score was 29% lower than the Cube’s (1617). It also scored 30% lower for the multicore score (4938). Be that as it may, it costs about 79% less.
