COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Hot wheels driving through the Midlands, all to support kids with cancer. That’s what many people were doing at the 40th Annual Speed & Beauty Benefit Car Show and Community Festival on Sunday.
From Lamborghinis to McLarens, there were dozens of cars entered in the car show looking to take home first place.
Three Rivers Region Porsche Club of America has been using the fundraiser for four decades to help support programs like Camp Kemo, giving kids a chance to get away from hospital walls and go to camp like most kids.
Supporting those kids and sharing a love for cars is what brought out Roy Ferguson, Matthew Sanders and his son Owen.
“Knock out two things at once; we’re supporting Camp Kemo and he loves cars,” Sanders said.
“Have a good time and contribute to a good cause,” Ferguson added.
Camp Kemo’s Brent McCraw said the fundraiser contributes about $10,000 dollars for Camp Kemo each year.
“To help us be able to not only send kids to camp but also help provide meals to our families that are at the hospital, help provide toys for kids that are going through treatment,” McCraw said. “It because of groups like this that we’re able to do that.”
One person looking to win the car show was Stephen Samuels with his 1925 Alvis. It’s nearly a century old, and he brought it out of the garage to support Camp Kemo.
“The days of kids rebuilding their transmission in the driveway are going away; you can’t do that with modern cars,” Stephens said. “If the kids get to see these older cars and fall in love with them, then they’re going to last and not end up in the junkyard.”
