WhatsApp could be planning to add Facebook-style ‘reactions’ to its service at some point later this year.

The most popular messaging app in the world (which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta) is notroriously slow at bringing new additions on board.

But the eagle-eyed types at WABetaInfo seem to have found evidence that reactions are in the pipeline.

Just like with Facebook Messenger, it would allow users to react to messages with a small emoji – like a thumbs up or a heart.

Message reactions would be available in both individual chat threads as well as group chats.

To start with, it appears WhatsApp will offer six potential emojis to react with – althought this could always be expanded at a later date.

WABetaInfo shared a screenshot revealing users can set ‘Reaction Notifications’ for group chats.

The shared screenshot further reveals that the new feature can be accessed from the Notification section.

According to the blog, the feature is currently under development and may not be rolled out for a while yet. However, it is expected to land at some point in 2022.

So far, it’s only been spotted in development for iOS devices but it’s highly likely WhatsApp will look at bringing the same feature to its Android user base.
