When staff at Culture Trip, a buzzy tech start-up in Mayfair, gathered for their weekly meeting, they were unprepared for what happened next.

Kris Naudts, the chief executive, had invited a neuroscientist to deliver a lecture on “deep thinking”. Staff were horrified when the psychiatrist began showing images of surgeons performing a lobotomy.

“I don’t think Kris had vetted what this guy was going to talk about,” said a former senior editor at the travel tips website. “It was weird and strange and a lot of people made complaints.

“It was symptomatic of the culture — you’d just want to get on with your work and they’d do all this weird stuff.”

Current and former insiders say the incident last year was typical of Culture
