2019 has been an absolutely amazing year for video games, from sleeper hits to triple-A releases. In honor of National Video Game Day 2019, we’ve compiled a list of 10 great titles from this year that players should try before fall’s blockbuster avalanche truly begins.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Sora, Donald and King Mickey return to the world of polygonal keyblade duels after over a decade in spinoff limbo. Its gorgeous graphics, combo-based gameplay and Disney-fuelled nostalgia help make the game stand out amongst the crowd of similar button mashers. There are plenty of gamers who didn’t connect with the KH franchise due to its convoluted story, but that hasn’t kept us away. It just caused us to study every version and timeline of Xehanort.
Mortal Kombat 11
Do you like seeing an ice ninja’s abdomen slam through his torso and into a helicopter blade? Only one fighting game experience has enough gore and splendor to keep even the most nihilistic fan engaged. While some might not be able to handle combos or pull off Fatalities without a long pause and guide, but that hasn’t kept us from enjoying one of the most spine-shattering experiences outside NC-17 horror flicks.
Cadence of Hyrule
Getting 2D Zelda games right isn’t easy, but there’s nothing better than when it’s done with style and grace. Matching the music to your moves really keeps you engaged, with the gameplay and hypnotizes you into playing more. With the Link’s Awakening reboot on the horizon for later this year and a Breath of the Wild sequel coming sometime in the future, the hero with a green hat is getting plenty of love.
World of Warcraft Classic
With the rerelease of the Vanilla version of WoW, we decided to give it a chance and realized we were missing out. Exploring a massive world with the aid of randoms and friends alike really draws you into a game with worse graphics than old iPhone titles. It might not be everyone’s pick for top-tier gaming, but we’ll definitely be renewing our subscriptions next month.
This technically isn’t a new game, just a game mode ripped from a mod ripped from a game mode of a mod. Regardless, we’ve have been playing so much TFT, it’s basically consumed our lives. Setting up champions in formations, matching them together and then letting them slay each other is just really fun. Our top writer is currently Platinum ranked, looking to hit Diamond before the end of 2019. Don’t mess with Draven or Jinx, those bad guys don’t play nice.
The battle royale that got the closest to overtaking Fortnite is still going strong, even after EA stopped paying streamers to play it. The fast-paced action combining heroes and looting really resonated with players, ourselves included. We might not drop in as much as we used to, but we still try and find time here and there to play Pathfinder and zip out across the map.
Devil May Cry 5
DMC 5 is one of the most visually stunning slashers of the decade, combining a mindful story with the gorgeous bod of Dante. However, it’s voice actors have posted racist YouTube videos and believe in QAnon conspiracy theories. If you can separate from the antics of its cast, this is a very visceral and enjoyable game.
Super Mario Maker 2
Make a Goomba fly through the air and come straight for Mario in this level designer for the Nintendo Switch. It might not be as graphically flashy as some of the other games on the list, but its simple but true gameplay makes up for it. We’ve have died hundreds of times trying to complete levels, getting increasingly frustrated as hours passed. But when I was finally able to jump on that flag and finish, I felt a sense of accomplishment. That’s what being a Mario Maker is all about.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Dead Cells was one of our favorite games of 2018 and Bloodstained builds on that voxel legacy well. Pick up weapons and slay demons to get their crystals. It’s as simple as that. It’s challenging to play, but that’s one of the reasons it’s so good.
Trover Saves The Universe
Disgusting humor, tasteless jokes and a chicken god with dogs for eyes. All normal and important parts of the Trover video game on the PlayStation 4. You can play with a VR headset but we opted out of the experience out of the desire to not have a headache while trying to review a title. That was the right decision, because the game controls so well with what you have in your hand. This game isn’t for everyone and there will be many people grossed out by its humor, but that just made us love it more.
