OnePlus Nord

It’s a tale as old as time; an affordable smartphone meets its demise in the hands of an expert tormentor. In this case, it was the recently launched OnePlus Nord that didn’t survive its encounter with JerryRigEverything, surrendering its integrity in a couple of areas.

As you might expect from a $400 smartphone, corners have been cut and sacrifices made in the construction of the OnePlus Nord. The display, protected by Gorilla Glass 5, exhibits scratches at Mohs level 6, and it’s a similar story on the glass great panel. There is good news in that the deeply scratched in-display fingerprint still manages to recognize Zack Nelson’s thumb. The 90Hz AMOLED display doesn’t hold up so well to the lighter’s flame, though, because pixels only return to normal on LCD panels, not OLED.

Having managed to withstand being bent from its rear with a bit of warping, the display stopped working properly after the phone was bent from the front. The plastic frame also showed signs of duress from the exercise.

The test isn’t all that scientific, certainly the pressure test anyway, so it’s important to view the Nord’s demise in perspective. You aren’t going to be exerting that level of force, over and over, to the front and rear of the device in normal usage, although if you put the Nord in the front pocket of your skinny jeans it may replicate the pressure test. So that’s something worth keeping in mind.
