The Ford Supervan 4 is a Transit more powerful than two F1 cars – but it’ll still carry your spanners

I DON’T know about you but in my experience workmen aren’t the best at keeping time.

They’ve always got a million things to do, picking up materials and fixing the mother-in-law’s leak before the day even starts.

But I think I’ve found the solution to their timekeeping problems. Ford has built a Transit which is more powerful than two F1 cars put together — and it’s still got room for your spanners.

Put it into the hands of every plumber in Britain and we’ll all then have our repairs done in lightning-quick time.

Hypercars from the likes of Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, Porsche, Bugatti and Koenigsegg are nothing new. But this is the first hypervan.

Press the green “rocket-ship” button on the steering wheel — and you’ve got exactly that.

Four electric motors banging out an incredible 2,038hp, 0-62mph in a face-melting two seconds flat, and a top speed of 200mph-plus.
Hilarious.

It goes like Transit off a shovel. One moment you’re here and the next you’re way over there.

But I have to say, as impressive as full thrust is, it is the other fun buttons on “Supervan 4” that really get my juices going.

There’s DRIFT mode (for proper Ken Block-style donut fun), RALLY mode (for gravel roads) and my new personal favourite, TYRE CLEANING mode.

‘New hillclimb record’

Keh? It fully brakes one axle while spinning the other, for front or rear-wheel burnouts.

That’s a real crowd-pleaser, as is the Le Mans-style “air jack” that lifts the van up for rapid wheel changes.

Yet “Supervan 4” is road-legal, will tow a two-tonne trailer and can be recharged like a regular EV at Tesco.

Which you might need to do regularly with just 35km of range at full race pace. It even has a slide-out cargo drawer.

Ford will unleash “Supervan 4” — based on the next-gen Transit Custom, below — at today’s Good-wood Festival of Speed in Sussex.

It could possibly set a new hillclimb record in the right conditions. It will then go on a world tour attempting speed records at other iconic motor-sport venues like Pikes Peak and the Nordsch-leife, and promoting super-fast Ford Pro connectivity in regular workaday Transits.

“Supervan 4” project leader Mike Norton said: “We wanted to create this Swiss Army knife record-breaking machine. Something that will bring excitement to electric vehicles and showcase what Ford is capable of.”

Job done.

Mike added: “If you look from the side, it looks like a Transit van. If you look from the front, it looks like a Transit van.

“It’s only when you get closer and look at the rear three-quarter, you see the F1-style shark fin. We did a lot of work on the whole airflow of the van.

“There’s a Le Mans-style cooling duct that goes from the front of the van all the way through to the back.”

Perfect. You could store some 2-by-2 timber in that.
