San Bernardino Symphony concert to feature David Archuleta – Press-Enterprise

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present ““Strauss, Price, and Archuleta,” a concert including holiday favorites, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino.

The first half of the program features “Don Juan” by Richard Strauss and Florence Price’s Piano Concerto.

“Don Juan, written by the great Richard Strauss, is one of the greatest symphonic tone poems ever written for orchestra,” Anthony Parnther, the orchestra’s music director and conductor, said in a news release.

“The work requires extraordinary virtuosity and passion from every single performer onstage. This is the most ambitious work I have programmed for our orchestra so far, and we’re excited to share a vivid workof this magnitude with our audience.”

Soloist in Florence Price’s Piano Concerto is Karen Walwyn, a Howard University Mellon Faculty Fellow who leads the Florence Price Recording Project, which is dedicated to the preservation of Price’s works. Price was the first woman of color to have an orchestral composition performed by a major orchestra, according to the news release.

In the second half, the orchestra will be joined by recording artist David Archuleta who will sing holiday favorites and original songs including several from his critically acclaimed holiday album, “Winter inthe Air.”

“The audience response to our 2019 concert with David Archuleta was incredible with fans coming from all over the world,” Dean McVay, president of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra’s board of directors, said in the news release. “In this particularly challenging year, it seemed only right that we invite back a vocalist whose charm, talent and nostalgic approach to holiday music will warm the hearts of all present.”

The concert will also include a toy drive, with those attending encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to leave in collection bins in the lobby. The San Bernardino Symphony, in partnership with the North End Neighborhood Association and Dignity Health St. Bernardine Medical Center, is collecting toys for distribution through the Children’s Fund.

Those attending the concert must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and matching photo ID. There will be temperature checks at the door, and face masks must be worn in the theater.

The California Theatre is at 562 W. Fourth St. Tickets for the Dec. 11 performance are available at sanbernardinosymphony.org or by calling the box office at 909-381-5388.
