Sixty-three novel coronavirus patients who lived in Imperial County or were being treated there are now in Riverside County hospitals, officials said Wednesday, May 27, amid unfounded rumors that the county is being forced to take in COVID-19 patients from Mexico.

YouTube videos and Facebook posts, without citing evidence, alleged that, per Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order, coronavirus patients were being airlifted from Mexico to Riverside County hospitals. County spokeswoman Brooke Federico said she’s not aware of any such order.

Last Friday, Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said 16 Americans living in Mexico, who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 in Imperial County, were being transferred to Riverside County.

Of the 63 patients with connections to Imperial County, 51 were transferred from Imperial County hospitals while another 12 are Imperial County residents who walked into Riverside County hospitals, a Riverside County news release states.
