The government has brought forward to 2030 its plan to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars.

Many motorists say electric cars take too long to recharge, the charging infrastructure in the UK is inadequate and the country does not generate enough electricity for everyone to go electric. Some claim smaller, more fuel-efficient cars and hybrid petrol-electric models are a more viable solution.

Environmentalists say we have to stop burning fossil fuels as quickly as possible, and electric vehicles are a good way to cut carbon emissions. And many drivers, including James May, find electric cars practical and enjoyable to drive.
