An Albany man was injured Saturday in a snowmobile crash in the Paul Bunyan State Forest.

According to a press release from the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, a snowmobile crash with injuries was reported at 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 20 on Steamboat Forest Road, two miles east of County Road 91 in Thorpe Township.

As deputies and medical personnel arrived at the scene, Nevis First Responders found the injured victim down a steep hill after he was thrown from his machine.

Investigation showed that William Scepaniak, 70, of Albany, Minn. was driving his 2019 Arctic Cat snowmobile east on Steamboat Forest Road when he lost control. His machine went down a steep ditch and struck a tree.

Scepaniak complained of head, back and leg pain and had to be carried up the steep hill. Hubbard First Responders used a rescue sled to transport him to a North Memorial Health ambulance, which then transported him to a waiting helicopter that flew Scepaniak to a St. Cloud hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
