Kings select Brandt Clarke with eighth overall pick – Press Enterprise – California News Times

Kings chose Defensive Brand Clark on Friday for their eighth overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, in addition to their formidable and stable outlook.

General Manager Rob Blake took second place overall in Quinton by Field last year and Alex Turcot in ninth place in 2019, adding a dynamic blue liner behind these two centers.

Blake said Scout Director Mark Janetti and his staff “highly appreciated Brandt from day one,” and Clark provided a level of offensive ability and hockey sensation that would help promote Kings’ defense corps. Added.

“Deception, the calm of the puck, the subtle play he does to bring the defender forward or to get the puck through the net,” Blake said of some of the things that made Clark stand out. From other defenses in this draft class.

Originally from Ottawa, Clark was the result of Toronto’s Don Mills Flyers program before a season in the Ontario Hockey League, where he led all the rookie defenses and scored. He spent last year in Slovakia’s top professional league after OHL canceled the season during a pandemic, scoring 15 points and a plus 6 in 26 games against mature competition.

Clark said he was honored to play professionally and to play in that situation. He was temporarily joined by his brother Graeme in Slovakia and then suddenly set out to play minor pro hockey on the New Jersey Devils system.

“I learned a lot about myself. I’ve become a much more balanced off-ice guy, but playing hockey with men was also a big deal for me,” Clark said.

Clark was the last of the four defenders selected in the first eight picks. After Buffalo first drafted Owen Power, New Jersey added Luke Hughes in 4th place, and Detroit chose Simon Edvinson sixth.

“We were looking at whether we were going to get up in one or two places,” Blake said. “But when it unfolded, we were happy to choose where we were and were very excited to reach what we had to do.”

Clark stands out as the only right defender in the group, and as the most aggressive defender, both in jumping into the attack with equal strength and in quartering back power play.

“I feel like a creative player. I’m very patient with the puck,” Clark said, adding that he also valued playing right and competitively defending.

Right-handed defense became popular on Friday as Rasmus Restoranen, who was moved from Buffalo to Philadelphia, and Seth Jones, who Chicago paid a lot to Columbus. Blake said Kings was “trying to participate in as many conversations as possible,” but Friday’s plan seemed to be to choose Clark and roll the team’s salary cap space to the opening of the free agent on Wednesday. ..

Clark is roughly compared to Kings’ Defense Drew Douty by some observers. He said he was eager to learn from Doughty and shaped some aspects of the game like Doughty, but avoided similarities.
