BIG SPRING,TX – Alex Smith, a former corrections officer at Big Spring, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after smuggling cell phones into the Big Spring Corrections Center.

Smith, 24 admitted to smuggling in 45 cell phones from October 2019 to December 2019. He would put phones in crates to sneak them past prison security and stored them in the food service cooler. Smith took about $10,000 in bribes.

An address book was found in an inmate’s cell containing Smith’s address. This inmate would order the phones to be delivered to Smith’s residence.

Smith would accept cash from people for the inmates he provided with the phones.

Smith was also written up by employees at the prison for leaving the staff restroom unlocked and  carrying “excessive amounts” of cash in the prison. An inmate also told staff that Smith was smuggling in the cell phones.

Alex Smith pleaded guilty to one count of bribery of a public official and has been recommended to serve his 18 month sentence in federal prison in Seagoville, TX.
