Defense shines in Enterprise win over Red Bluff – Red Bluff Daily News

RED BLUFF — The Enterprise Hornets came into Spartan Stadium Friday night and left with a 27-6 win over Red Bluff.

Red Bluff had trouble moving the ball early in the game, going three-and-out on the first two drives. The Hornets converted on their first two drives and that was the story of the night.

After a Spartans punt, the Hornets and Davion Welch moved the ball inside the Red Bluff 20 and quarterback Demarreya Lewis-Cooper swept right to go in for the score, making it 7-0 halfway through the first.

Another punt set the Hornets up at their own 45. Lewis-Cooper hit Holden Matthews in the corner of the end zone and Enterprise was up 13-0 after the snap was fumbled on the extra point attempt.

Again, the Hornets started near midfield early in the second, but this time middle linebacker Royce Vaught reached up and pulled a Lewis-Cooper pass out of the air.

Micah Jackson picked up the first first down of the game for Red Bluff and Cooper Bonham got another, with an hit out of bounds tacking on more yards, and the Spartans were driving. But that’s when defensive tackle Ja’lin Hudson offered some payback, picking off Caiden Wehbey and rumbling for a long return.

A penalty negated the return, but the Hornets took over at their own 15 with 5:39 left in the half. Lewis-Cooper connected with Holden Matthews for 30 yards and a score.

Red Bluff couldn’t move the ball and Enterprise took over at their own 43 with just more than a minute left to go to the half. Vaught made his second interception of the night, though, and the Spartans were in business at the Enterprise 21.

Wehbey completed a pass to Bonham, who ran in for the touchdown and it was 20-6 Enterprise after the 2-point conversion was stopped.

Lewis-Cooper broke off a big run and hit Hudson for another big gain, but penalties killed the drive and the teams went to the half 20-6.

The second half started on a positive note for the Spartans when Bonham was able to recover an onside kick. The drive fizzled, but good coverage on the punt pinned the Hornets at the Red Bluff 7.

Both defenses played well in the second half and Hudson made a second interception. Lewis-Cooper picked up some long runs and Welch got in from the 1 to put the Hornets on top 27-6 with just more than 4 minutes left in the third.

Neither team could sustain a drive the rest of the night, trading punts and turnovers on downs until the final buzzer.

The Spartans fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. They head to Palo Cedro Oct. 22 to take on Foothill.

The Hornets (6-1, 1-1) will host Shasta Oct. 22.
