Google is planning to announce a Pixel foldable smartphone this year, it seems, as another reliable source has just confirmed. The source we’re talking about is Jon Prosser, a well-known tipster.

He went to Twitter to share the news, though he’s not the first one who said it. Back in December, Ross Young, a well-known display analyst, said that Google, and a number of other OEMs will announce their foldable devices in 2021.

Back then, he said that Google, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo are planning to announce their first foldables. In fact, he said that both Samsung and OPPO will announce several of them, while other companies will launch one.

Google will announce a foldable smartphone this year, another reliable source confirms

Ross Young is usually spot on with his information, so there was no reason to doubt him. Still, considering that Jon Prosser now confirmed it as well, gives the information even more credibility.

We are still not sure when exactly will Google’s foldable smartphone launch, but it will happen in H2 for sure. It will not come sooner than that, though that makes sense. Google usually announces its flagship smartphones in late Q3 or Q4.

It may or may not arrive alongside the Google Pixel 6

The company’s foldable smartphone may arrive separate from the Google Pixel 6 series, but we’ll see. There’s still no specific information on the device either. At this point, we can only guess what will arrive.

We don’t know if Google is planning to make a smartphone that folds into a smaller form factor, or a larger phone that expands into a tablet. In other words, it will either make a Galaxy Z Flip series competitor, or a Galaxy Z Fold series competitor.

If we had to guess, though, we’d say that a Galaxy Z Fold series competitor is coming, that makes more sense. Let’s hope that Google’s phone won’t fold outwards, as that seems to be the unpopular way of doing things, for a good reason. Even Huawei is going down the Samsung path with the Huawei Mate X2.
