Google just dropped the first update for the developer preview. Android 12 Developer Preview 1.1 is here.

It’s a pretty small update, and does bring with it the March 2021 security update. It’s mostly a bug fixing update, which is a little surprising since Developer Previews are known to be buggy as heck anyways.

For those wondering about the specifics on this build, here they are:

Release date: March 3, 2021
Build: SPP1.210122.022
Emulator support: x86 (64-bit), ARM (v8-A)
Security patch level: March 2021
Google Play services: 21.02.14

What’s new here?

There’s not much new here with Android 12 DP 1.1. As expected by the .1 update here.

It addresses a couple of fixes, like a fix for the intermittent WiFi disconnects, as well as a “System UI keeps stopping” message. There’s also fixes for partial wake locks causing the battery to drain faster than expected, and an issue where a device’s fingerprint reader could become unresponsive.

Google also notes that there are various reboot bugs, other crashes and more being fixed in this small update.

It’s a small update in terms of what it is fixing, but it’s still a pretty large update. As the OTA is about 1.7GB for the Pixel 5. While the factory image is about 2.1GB in size. That means that there are a lot of things that got some changes in this update, as the OTA only updates files that have changes in them.

It’s a good idea to still go with the OTA, unless you are willing to factory reset your Pixel device. As the OTA will just be flashed on top of your data, so there’s no need to factory reset. But still a good idea to backup your data first.
