Amazon just can’t stop making smart speakers.

There’s now an intelligent music maker to suit every taste, size and budget with some, such as the Echo Input, starting for as little £35.

But Amazon clearly wants its fans to have even more choice and so it has recently launched its latest device called the Echo Show 5.

This clever device brings a speaker and mini display to your home without it removing too much money from your bank account.

Until now, buying the original all-screen Echo Show would have cost over £215 but Amazon’s newest addition is available for a fraction of that price.

For under £80 you get an Alexa-powered smart device that not only replies when you ask it questions but also shows a swathe of info on its 5.5-inch display.

You’ll get notifications, news snippets and your daily diary all revealed on the screen which certainly brings a useful added dimension to this gadget.

There’s also the ability to watch movies, view recipes and see the latest news reports plus it features a tiny camera which allows users to make and receive video calls.

Amazon has also been pretty smart as, unlike some previous Echo’s, there’s a small switch which can cover the camera if you are concerned about privacy.

Another nice feature of the screen is the option to have a digital clock displayed at all times with numerous styles and even family photos available to fit in with your home.

For your daily fix of music, there’s some impressive speakers which pump out audio at a decent level and you get all the usual smart functionality including switching on lights and heating just by talking to it.

Of course, this is an Echo so there’s access to millions of songs, playlists and radio stations and the recent addition of the Apple Music service now makes these devices even more appealing.

With so many features is a huge fan of the Echo and this new addition to the range means you get an extra bonus of that display without having to pay a small fortune to own one.

However, we’re not totally sold on the Echo Show 5.

Whist the screen is handy, the fact it’s so small limits what you can actually do with it – especially when you compare it to the larger 10.5-inch Echo Show.

That means we’ve not enjoyed using this device in areas such as the kitchen as the small screen is simply too small to view.

So, you’ll probably end up having the Show 5 on your desk or bedside table where it will work very nicely.

But its design simply isn’t as cute as the Echo Spot smart clock and we’d much rather have that device on display than the new Show 5.

Finally, there’s the audio as it doesn’t sound any better than the standard Echo which is currently on offer at a much cheaper price of £59.99.

All this puts the new Show 5 in an odd place with other Amazon products simply offering more useful features, lower price and improved design.

The Echo Show 5 is another great smart speaker from Amazon that offers a swathe of features at a price most people can afford.

Its small screen brings some nice extras such as viewing content, receiving messages and making video calls.

The fact it acts as a digital clock is also a nice bonus and its audio quality is decent enough to fill an average-sized room with the latest tunes and your favourite playlists.

However, its screen isn’t as good as the standard Echo Show, its design isn’t as appealing as the Echo Spot and it can’t beat the standard Echo for sound.

And that means the new Echo Show 5 just feels slightly pointless.

If you are desperate for a small and cheap smart speaker with a screen, the Echo Show 5 is very likeable but we’re just not sure we love it.
