Apple released the new MacBook Air with the latest M2 chip in June 2022 at a starting price of US$1,199, US$200 more than the M1 MacBook Air. You can now get the base version of the M2 MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of NVMe storage for US$999.99 at Costco (via slickdeals). Keep in mind that to get the US$150 discount, you will need to be a Costco member. A Costco membership costs US$60 per year. Even after we factor in the US$60 cost, you can still get the MacBook Air with the Apple M2 chip for a mentionable US$90 off.
While not ideal, you’ll have to pay 5% extra over the sale price if you don’t have a Costco membership, making US$1,049.99 the final price for non-members. This is still quite a significant saving vs the US$1,199 MSRP.
Now the question becomes: Is the 2022 MacBook Air with Apple M2 worth it?
The M2 MacBook Air is a phenomenal machine as a whole per our testing of the device. The redesigned M2 Air is both sturdy and super thin while managing to be slightly lighter than the M1 MacBook Air. Similarly, the new 2560×1664 resolution display supports the wider P3 color gamut and has a max peak brightness of 500 nits.
Finally, the CPU performance of the M2 MacBook Air is excellent, as we noted a 7% uplift in single-core and close to an 8% gain in multi-core performance over the M1 MacBook Air. Apple M2’s 8-core GPU also came out 15% ahead vs the 8-core M1 GPU in our tests. Battery life is also superb as the laptop lasted more than 15 hours in our Wi-Fi test.
Put simply, the 2022 MacBook Air with Apple M2 ticks all the boxes and it could very well be the most sensible choice for most people.
