The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is loaded to the gills with the latest in automotive technologies when it comes to the supertruck’s mechanical attributes as much as its cabin. One of these features is the ability to enter as well as start the Hummer EV using only the owner’s smartphone.

As first reported by, the technology that makes it all possible is known as “digital key” within GM. Both Apple iPhones as well as phones running the Android operating system will be compatible with the feature, and the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be the first General Motors vehicle to offer this technology.

Digital Key utilizes a combination of Ultra-Wide-Band (or UWB) and Bluetooth Low Energy (or BLE) spectrums. The technology was made standard by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), which is a cross-industry organization that designs smartphone-to-car connectivity solutions, and Motors is a member of the consortium.

As for the actual phone-to-vehicle communication, the owner’s smartphone will communicate with the GMC Hummer EV via Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology. The tech is currently on version 2.0, but the GMC Hummer EV is set to launch with version 3.0 support, which will take advantage of both UWB and BLE.

As GM Authority was first to report, the GMC Hummer EV will use the Android-powered Google Infotainment Services to power the supertruck’s infotainment system. The inclusion of Google Infotainment Services brings hands-free calling and texting through Google Voice Assistant, as well as other connected features like Google Navigation for locating things like EV charge stations.

All of these services will be displayed on the GMC Hummer EV’s 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen which works in tandem with the 12.3-inch diagonal driver information center display. These two displays show information from the various off-road widgets, such as torque output, tire pressure, differential locker engagement, pitch and roll angles, torque vectoring, and more.
