First impressions are important, and even more so during a meeting. It’s good to make a good impression to have a successful meeting, which entails having to look smart to the other person. However, there are times that people try a little too hard to look the part.
American comedian and writer Sarah Cooper picked up on this and decided that it was great material for a satirical book. In 2014, she wrote a blog entry called “10 Tricks To Appear Smart in Meetings” that went viral with 5 million visits. She then decided to quit her job at Google to pursue writing and comedy full time. She eventually wrote “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings: How to Get By Without Even Trying” which gives comical tips regarding meetings while providing her point of view of happenings within a company.
Challenge: go do all 10 of these in one meeting today 😎

Humor in meetings
While the book presents all of its so-called advice in a deadpan yet humorous manner, it periodically has real tactics and strategies to interact in meetings. As the title also suggests, it will at least give you ideas on how to appear smart to people and make them believe it.
Online meetings have been more essential these days as businesses make efforts in continuing to connect with people. While meetings can be boring and tedious, at least the book finds something that everyone can laugh about while picking up “tips” on how to look impressive without effort. The book is 176 pages long, illustrating common situations in the office environment and teamwork with some fairly precise profiles that can make more than one person feel identified.
Despite its completely satirical take on the corporate world, Cooper still has some sound advice that can help. The book isn’t made to be taken seriously at all and not to be followed to a tee. But, for those meetings in which you really have nothing to say, this book is a witty ally to take notes from. We guarantee that after reading it, you will never see your work meetings in the same way again. If you want to have a good laugh while having a long virtual meeting, “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings: How to Get By Without Even Trying” is currently available for $15.60.
