There are many contenders for the title of best gaming keyboard, and for good reason. A great keyboard can give you an edge in both real-time strategy games or first-person shooters, letting you program macros for easy use, react with lightning fast speed and quickly use multiple successive commands without bugging out.
While the competition is stiff, your keyboard definitely doesn’t have to be. Razer has released what they consider to be their fastest gaming keyboard ever, complete with the familiar tactile feedback you expect but none of the stickiness or rigidity of traditional mechanical switches.
The Razer Huntsman (priced at $149) owes its speed and lightness to its unique Razer Opto-Mechanical Switches. Built with optical light sensor technology, the switches actuate via light – not metallic contact, like on most keyboards. When you press down on the switch, it sends a light signal to a receiver, instantly activating the switch command. The result: an actuation distance 30% shorter than other clicky mechanical switches (or as Razer puts it, actuation at “the speed of light”).
The second innovation found in the keyboard is Razer’s Stabilizer Bar. No matter where you press on a key, you need the same amount of force (45g to be exact) to actuate it. That means less misfiring or no wobbly feeling if you accidentally hit the edge of the key. It’s a less obvious perk, but still contributes to a more seamless and pleasant gaming experience.
The average computer user may not care about the technology inside their keys, but for gamers, it’s a pretty big deal. In addition to the Razer Opto-Mechanical™ Switches, the Hunstman comes with programmable keys with on-the-fly macro recording, 10 key roll-over with anti-ghosting, and even a gaming mode that you can toggle to prevent you from pressing the wrong keys at critical moments.
A keyboard also has to be durable if it’s going to last through late-night gaming sessions and button-mashing sprees. The Razer Huntsman claims to last up to 100 million keystrokes, again thanks to its unique switches which rely less on physical contact to actuate than their mechanical counterparts. Compare this with the keyboard you use at work, which will likely last up to 50 million keystrokes.
If you or the gamer in your life is looking for an upgrade, now is the time. All orders over $79 on Razer’s site currently enjoy free shipping to the United States, which applies to both the Razer Huntsman and the Razer Huntsman Elite.
