The Tampa Bay area tech scene might be thriving in terms of employee growth and corporate expansions, but the average annual pay scale, at least compared nationally, is lacking.
The Tampa -St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA had an average tech employee salary of $83,550 a year in 2017, according to a new survey from business.org, a financial analysis website. While that salary is considerably higher than the overall average salary in Florida and the Tampa MSA, in the land of tech, it’s mediocre, at best. At that salary, for example, Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater is No. 52 nationally.
But it’s the cities ahead of the region that could really make a business leader gulp. Regions that have higher average tech salaries than Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater include Albany, N.Y.; Akron, Ohio; and Allentown, Pa — areas people normally escape from and head to Florida. Likewise, the No. 1 region on the list is Syracuse, N.Y., with an average annual salary of $117,000 last year, the report shows. (Other top cities on the list are the usual ones, including San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington, D.C.)
Tech occupations analyzed in the report include actuaries, research scientists, network architects, software developers, statisticians, web developers and more, according to a business.org blog post.
The tech salary story only gets worse outside Tampa. The Lakeland-Winter Haven region had an average annual tech salary of $80,810 in 2017, the report shows, good for No. 69 nationwide. The North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton region, with a salary of $80,590, was No. 72.
Cape Coral-Fort Myers, which has been adding tech-related jobs, at both big and small businesses, ranked No. 99 on the survey, with an average annual salary of $65,290. That’s one spot ahead of Jackson, Miss. and one spot behind Augusta-Richmond County, Ga.
