BRIGHTON — After a successful freshman campaign for Petoskey’s wrestling team, Rippin Vining has continued to improve on the mat for the youth team.
Vining won the Greco-Roman style triple crown at the Brighton wrestling tournament on Sunday. Vining defeated Dominik Watson of Team Donahoe in the first round of the Cadet 147-160 pound division, and then pinned Mark Crossen of Clinton Township to finish first at the event.
Vining also placed first in the Folkstyle Cadet 147-149 pound division on Sunday with victories by tech fall and pin. The young wrestler finished the weekend with a 5-2 record after going 1-2 on Saturday in the Cadet 152-158 division in Temperance Bedford.
Petoskey’s Brett Kloss placed first in the Freestyle Schoolboy 80-88 pound division in Temperance Bedford on Saturday, wining both matches by tech fall.
Kloss took third overall in the Greco-Roman Schoolboy 86-92 competition in Temperance Bedford, finishing1-2 in the event.
In Brighton, Kloss won the triple crown freestyle for the Schoolboy 79-88 division, winning both matches by tech fall. Kloss then finished the weekend with a triple crown victory at the Greco-Roman Schoolboy 79-88 division with two more tech fall wins.
Tate Dohm placed first in Brighton in the Greco-Roman Cadet 138 division by pin and tech fall victories and claimed a second-place finish in the Cadet 137-138 division in the freestyle event in Brighton.
Petoskey’s youth wrestling team also competed in Pine River on Sunday with Ryker Farnsworth claiming third in the Novice 76-86 division, Mitchell Gregory earning second in the Novice 122-128 division and Miulla Farnsworth placing second in the Schoolboy 152-160 class for the freestyle events. Rounding out the top performers at the event was Dawson Gregory who placed second in the Junior 149-160 division.
In the Greco-Roman event, Mitchell Gregory took first, Ryker Farnsworth placed second and Dawson Gregory claimed a second-place finish.
